Since 1968, the Maryland Association of REALTORS® (MAR) has offered the REALTOR® Institute of Maryland program where it has provided an educational opportunity for those who are interested in furthering their knowledge of real estate. The REALTOR® Institute, developed in concert with standards established by the National Association of REALTOR®, is designed to provide comprehensive education in all phases of real estate for members building careers in the industry.

The GRI (Graduate REALTOR® Institute) designation is the Nation's #1 leading designation within the real estate industry.

Maryland's GRI now consists of 2 series totaling 72 hours of specific education outlined by the National Association of Realtors® curriculum that includes topics such as pricing, law, finance, business development, technology, ethics, agency and marketing, to name a few. Subject matter in each series is not cumulative and the first two series (100 & 200) can be completed in any desired order within 5 years of the start date to qualify.

Only REALTORS® may be awarded the GRI designation and they must maintain their REALTOR® membership to continue using the designation. The designation may not be used until a State Association awards a certificate of completion for the entire program.  Non-REALTORS® are welcome to attend to receive continuing education credits and increase their knowledge base.

Series 100 & 200 each consist of six (6) days comprised of 6 hours of instruction for each day for a total of 36 hours per Series.  Class time for Series 100 & 200 runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with an exam immediately following each module.  MAR cosponsors the GRI Series with local boards/associations.  Each Board/Association within the State of Maryland operates independently in determining dates and cost. To register, please contact the appropriate Local Board/Association.

Interested in becoming an Associate Broker or Broker of Record?

MAR has developed an additional 48-hour  program consisting of Series 300 & 400.  Series 300 & 400 (each 4 days) are only available to GRI Designees (those who have completed Series 100 & 200).  The class time for Series 300 & 400 runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with an exam immediately following each module.  Those interested in becoming an Associate Broker or Broker of Record can complete classroom Series 100 - 400, which will meet the required educational hours to sit for the Associate Broker and/or Brokers exam.  Upon completion of the education hours, broker/associate broker candidates have one year to sit and pass the exam.  If one doesn't pass within one year of completion, the coursework must be taken again.  Notice:  Students taking Series 300 & 400 are required to bring with them and have a working knowledge of a financial calculator. Calculator must have Present Value, Number, Interest, Payment, Future Value functions.  Recommended calculators are HP12C or HP10B11.
